Mateusz Smoczynski


A violinist. A graduate of Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. As a jazz violinist he debuted in 1999 at the Kalatowki Jazz Camp with Jacek Namyslowski's Quintet. With this band he won numerous competitions and awards.

Mateusz performed in several European countries (e.g. Italy, Germany, Ukraine, Denmark, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Slovakia) and at most major jazz festivals in Poland. He works with top Polish musicians including Zbigniew Namyslowski, Jaroslaw Smietana, Krzesimir Debski, Maciej Strzelczyki, Janusz Skowron, Kazimierz Jonkisz, Zbigniew Wegehaupt, Ryszard Borowski, Grzech Piotrowski, Andre Ochodlo and Krzysztof Herdzin. With the latter, Mateusz performed in the original project called Jazz for String Orchestra as a soloist and concertmaster of the Sinfonia Viva.
Currently, Mateusz performs with his own band, together with his elder brother, Jan (piano),Konrad Zemler (guitar), Wojciech Pulcyn (double-bass) and Lukasz Zyta (drums). With this group, he recorded his debut album Inspirations, paying tribute to his two greatest inspirations: John Coltrane and Zbigniew Seifert. In the following year, Mateusz released another album called Expressions. Both albums were highly popular and received many positive reviews.

In 2007 Mateusz received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture ("Young Poland"). In June 2008 he was awarded Oscar in the “Jazz Hope of the Year 2007” category. In autumn this year Mateusz will release another album called New Trio, where he will perform alongside his brother, Jan Smoczynski (this time as Hammond organist) and the Russian drums star, Alexander Zinger.
